DECEMBER 27th, 2013

Randy played "I Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon every day in choir at Lakeland Union High School hoping Melanie would catch the drift.

Randy went off to freshman year of college in Grove City, PA and the long distance began. Melanie started her senior year at Lakeland.

After two years of letter writing, road trips to see each other, and lots of patience, Randy says those

"three little words."

Randy studied abroad in Spain for the semester and decided he wanted to marry Melanie. He got to work on proposal ideas!

Randy asked Melanie's mom for her blessing and planned the perfect surprise proposal. He took his mom, her mom, and his friend Tommy  ring shopping.

(As told by Melanie) Randy took me out for a nice dinner at the Guides Inn and on our way back home he said we needed to stop at the church to pick up something his dad had forgotten. I was getting anxious to go home because I ate too much at dinner and just wanted to sit and watch a movie. Randy opened my door and asked me to come inside with him and being my stubborn self, I denied. He told me to trust him and come in so after some time, I finally took his hand. He led me into the dark church where a pathway was a lit up with candles leading into the sanctuary. Up the aisle were more candles and gorgeous lights everywhere leading up to the piano. As soon as I saw the piano, it hit me that he was going to propose because it was covered with all of the letters I had written him over the 3 1/2 years. Every note, drawing, letter, gift I had ever given him was on the piano. He sat me down next to him and reminded me of something from our first summer. He had played me a song called "I Will Be Here" by Stephan Curtis Chapman and told me that someday he hoped he could truly mean the lyrics and that the next time he would sing it to me was when he did. So of course he sang me the beautiful song of how he would be with me through everything. After he was done and I was clearly crying all of my makeup off, Randy grabbed one more letter that he then read aloud to me. In it was memories of our relationship, praises to God for guiding and loving us, and promises for the future. He then took my hand and led me to the front of the piano that we had spent countless hours at in high school, got down on one knee and said "there is only one thing left for me to do. Melanie Merle Coconate, will you marry me?" Through all of the tears I said yes and both of our families and friends came from all over the sanctuary cheering. It was the most beautiful night of our lives filled with some of the most important people to us.

She did!

The two went on their first date complete with a campfire on the island behind Randy's house. He asked her to be his girlfriend and sealed the night with their first kiss!
